Insights this week

Welcome to Insights. As with everyone around the globe, we are shocked and saddened by the tragedy still unfolding in Japan. The Japanese people continue to be in our thoughts, especially our colleagues and friends in the tourism industry.

River Deep Mountain High - online booking case study

Tourism NSW recently announced a new feature on its websites which enables NSW tourism operators to have their products booked online and in real-time. Accommodation, attractions and tour inventory with live availability and pricing can be easily booked by potential visitors on our sites and also a range of other tourism distributors’ websites, as selected by the operator.

Tourism NSW’s system works via a single online booking platform called Tourism Exchange Australia (TXA). River Deep Mountain High (RDMH) is a Blue Mountains adventure tour operator specialising in abseiling, canyoning, rock climbing, mountain biking, 4WD tours and team-building.

New tourism resources for industry

Tourism NSW has released two new resources for the tourism industry, both available free online at www.tourism.nsw.gov.au/resources.

The Tourism Business Toolkit is designed by Tourism NSW to assist tourism operators at any stage of development. It includes a guide to understanding the tourism industry as well as practical tips and insights for tourism product development, pricing, promotion and distribution. The toolkit replaces the former StartSmart guide with new information and significant updates and enhancements.

A new Tourism Module is now featured as the first industry-specific module within the Small Business Toolkit, which is a hands-on, interactive, online business planning tool designed by Industry & Investment NSW. The Tourism Module features interactive tourism planning tools, checklists, quizzes, case studies and videos.

Local Government Taskforce

Last week the NSW Government released the report from the joint Ministerial Taskforce on Tourism and Local Government.

Following the recommendations, the NSW Government will help local councils identify and capitalise on new tourism opportunities as well as grow the existing local industry. The findings of the Taskforce will help boost local visitor numbers in the regions, where tourism is worth almost $12 billion annually.

Australian RV camping forum

Last week the Australian RV Camping Forum was formed in Sydney by a number of key stakeholders from the Recreational Vehicle (RV) tourism industry. The meeting was convened by the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia Ltd (CMCA).

As a result of the forum, a Code of Conduct will be developed for tourists hiring RVs in Australia, especially those without on board, self-contained toilet and shower facilities. New Zealand has implemented a similar Code of Conduct for RV tourists, giving advice on environmental issues, designated places to camp, the appropriate use of facilities, and the correct disposal of grey and black water waste.
